Overview

Ancient Hawaiians invented surfing, and it is as big a part of Hawaiian culture today as ever. Learn how to surf, or take your skills to the next level, with a 2-hour lesson at Lahaina Harbor / Breakwall with ideal spots for both beginners and the more experienced. Run by the nephew of legendary Hawaiian surfer Titus Kinimaka, the Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy will pair you with highly trained and enthusiastic staff who will ensure a fun time out on the water and might even help you discover a new passion!

Interested in our Kaanapali Beach location instead? It doesn't generally have as long and reliable waves as the Lahaina town location, but this means you don't have to paddle out as far, and the viewing area for any observers is more convenient right from Kaanapali Beach. The time difference (2 hours vs. 1.5 hours) is just because it takes a bit longer to walk over to the beach in Lahaina, as well as to go out a bit further to catch waves; otherwise, you're catching a similar amount of waves at both.

Guidebook Reviews

Maui Revealed Guidebook:

Surfing is synonymous with Hawai’i; Hawaiians invented it. Lessons aren’t as difficult as you may think, and it’s fairly easy to master. Lahaina is a much better place to learn than South Maui.

Lonely Planet Guidebook:

Lahaina is a great place to learn to surf, with first-class instructors, gentle waves, and ideal conditions for beginners. The fun reef breaks at Lahaina Breakwall and Harbor cater to both beginner and intermediate surfers.

Fodor's Guidebook:

Top 15 Maui Attraction: Go Surfing on West Maui. Lahaina is great for beginners. Lahaina Harbor offers an excellent inside wave for beginners (called “Breakwall”), as well as the more advanced outside.

Royal Hawaiian Surf Academy: The owner grew up rippin’ it with his uncle, legendary surfer Titus Kinimaka, so it’s no wonder his passion translates to a fun, memorable time.

Moon Guidebook:

Best 11 Outdoor Adventures in Maui: Surfing in Lahaina. Beginners will love the thrill of their first wave, and expert surfers can head to the breaks scattered across the island’s west side. Top 10 Best Surfing Spots on Maui: Lahaina Breakwall.

Royal Hawaiian: All of the instructors are competent and patient professionals who are guaranteed to get you up and riding.
